25000 BC:
first evidence of settlement (it is roughly from this time that the world-famous statue of the 'Venus of Willendorf' originates)
15 BC:
the Celtic kingdom of Noricum comes under Roman rule
300 AD:
settlement by Germanic tribes and start of stronger Christianisation of the population
600 AD:
Avars settle in the area
795 AD:
destruction of the Avar kingdom under Charlemagne; the western part of Niederösterreich becomes part of the Carolingian marches
907 AD:
victory of the Magyars over the Bavarians at the Battle of Bratislava; Niederösterreich comes under Magyar rule
976 AD:
enfeoffment of the Babenbergs with the eastern marches (after the victory of the German King Otto I the Great over the Magyars at Lechfeld in 955)
996 AD:
first recorded mention of the name 'Österreich = Ostarrichi' (Austria)
1156 AD:
Austria, which comprises more or less the present regions of Ober- and Niederösterreich, gets separated from Bavaria and becomes a duchy
1282 AD:
enfeoffment of the Habsburg Albrecht I with the Austrian areas
1365 AD:
Rudolf IV founds the university of Vienna
1425 AD:
Bohemian Hussits raid the northern part of Niederösterreich
1529 AD:
Osmanic troops besiege Vienna and devastate extensive areas in Niederösterreich
1683 AD:
second Turkish siege of Vienna, however decisive defeat by an Austrian-Polish army
1774 AD:
Empress Maria Theresia implements an educational reform (school attendance becomes obligatory for children aged 6 to 12)
1781 AD:
Emperor Joseph II grants freedom of religious practice to Protestants and Greek Orthodoxies
1805, 1809 AD:
Napoleon in Austria, several victorious battles against Austrian troops
1815 AD::
Congress of Vienna, reshaping of Europe by the "Holy Alliance"
1861 AD:
provincial parliaments are established in Austria due to constitutional reforms
1918 AD:
end of the Habsburg monarchy and proclamation of the First Republic (Niederösterreich becomes a federal province in the modern sense of the term)
1922 AD:
division of the province Niederösterreich-Land into two separate provinces: Niederösterreich and Vienna
1938 AD:
annexation of Austria by Nazi-Germany
1945 AD:
proclamation of the Second Republic after the end of the Second World War and resumption of Niederösterreich's provincial administration
1955 AD:
withdrawal of the Allied and Russian troops from Austria
1986 AD:
St Pölten becomes the new provincial capital
1994 AD:
67.8% of Niederösterreich's population support Austria's accession to the EU
1.1.1995 AD:
Austria joins the European Communities
